The Props Team consulted with the Props Supervisor at The Grand Theatre in London, Ontario Canada for information on what might be different in a Canadian convenience store.

  • Cigarettes can be sold, but cannot be displayed openly
  • Lotto scratch tickets tray and tickets
  • Some information on Canadian brand candies and snacks as well as what American brands are typically found there.   *Look for the Cottage Country branded items, which were her suggestion
  • We borrowed multiple large items from 2 other DMV area theatres.
    • Arena Stage: The ATM
    • Signature Theater (Hot off their production of In The Heights): the Large Fridge, the Cash Register, the Wire Newspaper Stand, the Candy Machine/Dispenser, and the Exterior Newspaper Dispenser
  • The initial layout for all of the shelves was this year’s Props Apprentice’s Capstone Project with guidance from the Props Supervisor and Scenic Designer.
  • The Set Dressing for this production (All of the stuff on the shelves and the walls that actors do not interact with) accounts for approximately half of the show’s Props Budget.
  • There are several Canadian-branded items we specially ordered from Canada because their packaging would be hard to replicate.
    • Oasis Peach Clementine Juice Boxes
    • Cottage Country branded items: Caramel Corn, pretzels, trail mixes
    • Crispers chips
    • Nestle Aero Chocolate Bars
    • Hershey Glosette Raisins  (**The 2nd Glosettes are fully fake)
    • Coffee Crisps Chocolate Bars
    • Smarties
    • Cheezies
  • Around ⅓ of the products are not real.  Most of these are fully created from scratch by the Props Department, while a few are sneakily repackaged or have stickers added to modify their packaging.  The repackaging is to represent Canadian brands and packaging from 2012.
    • Sneaky repackaging: Heinz canned beans, Kraft Dinner (aka Mac N’ Cheese); Excel gum (Extra); Pringles Cans (2012 logo); Nestle Pure Life Water (had to put the Nestle back into the logo)
  • Full Prop Shop Builds: Glossettes; Some of the candy bars; Old Dutch brand chips; About half of the large bags of chips (can you tell which?); all of the snack cake boxes that are not opened; Cereal boxes;  the Newspapers; the Lotto Tickets (which are made to really scratch off)
  • There are several joke items on display to add a little humor and whimsy.  And because they made the Set Designer and Props Supervisor laugh.  Can you find them?
    • Canned Moose (the Props Supervisor’s favorite find)
    • Tourist Section complete with buffalo plaid
    • Lumberjack plushie
  • Multiple people contributed suggestions for the various wall adverts, community posts and flyers:  The set designer, lighting designer and the assistant director among them.
  • Some items are completely shop built by the Props Artisan. Highlights are the Lotto Tray and the Coffee dispenser machine
  • We had 2 overhire people in for several days just to cut out and attach labels to items and build chip bags.
  • All of the fake chips are filled with packing peanuts.
  • The Insam Energy Drink that the actor drinks is actually Decaf Sweet Tea.
  • All of the Thank You notes to Mr. Kim were handwritten by the Props Supervisor
  • Most of the handwritten signs and notes were handwritten by the Scenic Designer
  • Total of different products for sale in Kim's Convenience: 354
  • Total number of items for sale: 1879  (multiples of all of the products). This number does not include the individual pieces of all of the bulk candy sold at the counter
  • Total number of shop-built or modified products: 62
  • Total number of shop-built or modified items: 327 (we built multiples of all 62 products)
  • And there is also a rubber duck and mini-rubber chicken on the set to find.
