Below are revisions to our Covid safety protocols. These revisions allow us to be strategic and flexible as we continue responding to the ongoing health situation. Olney Theatre Center will continue to monitor the COVID situation in Montgomery County, alongside County regulations and CDC recommendations, and will make revisions to these policies as events warrant. Patrons are advised to check this page for updates.
We ask that if you are experiencing symptoms, please stay home. Use this CDC symptom checklist to see if you need to quarantine or get tested.
Please note that our vaccination requirements now vary according to the theatre space your event is located in.
- For performances of The Joy That Carries You in the 150-seat Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab only:
MASKS & PROOF OF COVID-19 VACCINATION
Masks and proof of COVID vaccination are required to attend all performances in the Mulitz Gudelsky Theatre Lab only. Exceptions may be made for those who are not vaccinated, such as children under 5 (although per our content guidance, The Joy That Carries You is not appropriate for young children), people with certain medical conditions preventing vaccination, or those with closely held religious beliefs. These patrons must provide proof of a timely negative Covid-19 PCR test taken within 48 hours or a rapid antigen test taken within six hours of showtime. This policy will remain in effect through at least June 12, 2022. Any changes will be announced prior to that date.
Along with a photo ID, please be you will be asked to show one of the following proofs of vaccination:
- You may present either your original vaccine card, a legible digital or hard copy
- You may present one of the commonly used vaccine passport apps that verify both your vaccination status and i.d. such as Health Pass, Bindle, VaxYes
- Digital vaccination cards through your home Health Department (check with your state/county’s Health Department if not listed here): Maryland, DC, Virginia
PROOF OF NEGATIVE COVID TEST
We do not accept at-home testing results.
Unvaccinated patrons must show either a negative COVID-19 PCR test or a professionally administered Antigen test.
Your digital or printed NEGATIVE test result must list your name (matched to your photo ID) and a time of testing within 48 hours of your performance time for a PCR test or within 6 hours for an Antigen test.

Proof of vaccination or negative Covid test is no longer required for performances at the Mainstage, the 1938 Original Theatre or the Root Family Stage
Patrons are required to wear masks in performance spaces regardless of vaccination status at all times. Masks are not required while consuming concession in lobby areas only. No food or drink is allowed in the theatre.
OLNEY THEATRE STAFF
All Olney Theatre Center staff have been vaccinated, have their temperature taken, and complete a health screening survey prior to starting their shift. All employees who interact with our patrons (Box Office, House Managers, Concessions) are required to wear masks and follow a regular routine of handwashing.
There will be a limited number of printed paper programs available and we ask that they be limited to one copy per party. All program information is available digitally. You will be emailed a link and there will be signage with QR codes available to access a program. Our most current paperless program can always be found at olneytheatre.org/e-program. A concessions menu is available and when possible, we encourage them to be consumed outdoors. While enjoying concessions you are invited to lower your mask in lobby areas only. Patrons are not allowed to bring food or drink into the theatre to ensure that masks are worn at all times in performance spaces.
All HVAC systems utilize MERV-13 filters which are regularly monitored by Potomac Mechanical Contractors. HVAC systems in performance spaces will run continuously at least two hours prior to being occupied, while occupied, and two hours after being vacated to continue circulation and filtration of air.
