What the World Needs Now: An Evening of Burt Bacharach

As a singer, songwriter, and producer, Burt Bachrach’s musical catalog is among the greatest of the 20th Century. His hits as a performer like “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” pale in comparison to those he wrote and composed for others, like “What The World Needs Now” for Dionne Warwick, “I Say A Little Prayer” for Aretha Franklin, “Arthur’s Theme” for Christopher Cross, and “On My Own” for Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald. Plus timeless songs like “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” and “Do You Know The Way To San Jose.” One evening may not be enough to cover them all.

It’s no secret that Jerry Herman is one of our favorite composers. Along with the classics you may know from Mame, Hello, Dolly!, and La Cage aux Folles are deep cuts from shows like Dear World, The Grand Tour, and Mack and Mabel – which was Jerry’s personal favorite and featured a young Bernadette Peters. It may be late August, but its never too soon to sing along to his classic “We Need A Little Christmas,” not to mention “Before the Parade Passes By,” “If He Walked Into My Life,” and more. 

The Chairman: Frank Sinatra

Frankly, there’s only one Chairman, and Wendell Rakosky has proved himself to be one of the greatest Frank tribute artists in the country. Praised in the Baltimore Banner and CanvasRebel, Wendell’s act brings the leader of the Rat Pack to life. We’ll crank up the AC in the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab, so just like Frank, we’ll all be cool.

It's Jennie the Cat's first time visiting the beach. She needs help learning how to pack and what to do when she gets there. Along the way she'll meet some new friends, practice sharing, and learn to be brave. This puppet show features soft hand puppets and original music, along with plenty of chances for the audience to sing and dance along! This ingrid&mollie show is made for the child within us all, and especially for ages 2-8.

Glenn Leonard’s Temptations Revue

Glenn Leonard’s Temptations Revue is the world’s most authentic and talented tribute to the original Temptations today! It’s a dynamic show with 5 vocalists that have all the choreography, personality, talent and style of the originals, including the legendary former lead tenor! Glenn Leonard served as their lead tenor from 1975-83, and recorded 10 albums with the group, including his signature Temptations version of “Silent Night,” which is one of the most played songs on the radio, worldwide, at Christmas time. Glenn also performed and recorded with all of the original members during the famed Temptations Reunion Tour in 1982.   Rounding out this dynamic lineup are Shelton Price, Melvin Franklin, Jr., former Atlantic Records recording artist Kareem Ali, and one of the most powerful voices in the business, Andre Jackson! All are longtime members of Glenn Leonard’s Temptations Revue! Glenn Leonard’s Temptations Revue, with their full band, perform all the hit songs that fans know and love!

Lab Lounge: Ella Fitzgerald

Local favorite Anitra McKinney channels the first lady of jazz in this edition of the Lab Lounge. Fitzgerald’s catalog is replete with hits to choose from including Mack the Knife, to How High the Moon, from It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) to Someone to Watch Over Me.

Arguably one of the most influential American popular artists, inarguably the “Genius of Soul,” Ray Charles’ impact on American music made him an inaugural inductee to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. His catalog of hits includes classics such as “Georgia On My Mind,” “Baby What’d I Say?” and “Hit The Road Jack.” Join us for an evening to celebrate how Charles incorporated gospel and blues to create a uniquely American genre.

TUSK: The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute

Playing the hits and deep cuts spanning the career of Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame group Fleetwood Mac, Tusk has been crisscrossing the country since 2008 as The Classic Fleetwood Mac Tribute. Five pro musicians turned into masters of their trade through decades of individual music study, live performance, creative risk and devotion to the art. TUSK features note-perfect renditions of both the solo and full band songs, with each member specializing in one of the core lineup of Fleetwood Mac (Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood). They possess an electric stage presence that can only come from well over a decade touring together. Truly the best at what they do, TUSK is unmatched in their tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time.

Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC: I Am America

Led by Artistic Director Thea Kano, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC (GMCW) is now in its 45th season. GMCW sings to inspire equality and inclusion with musical performances and education promoting justice and dignity for all. GMCW has more than 250 singing members, three select ensembles, a dance company, a youth chorus, and an annual audience of more than 10,000 people.

The Chorus and its ensembles keep a very busy schedule with more than 100 outreach performances each season. Past outreach performances have included the HRC National Dinner, performing live on NBC-TV’s The Today Show, an historic LGBTQ music and outreach tour in Ukraine, a first-ever tour by an LGBTQ+ chorus to Cuba, and a special concert in Reykjavik, Iceland. GMCW has performed for President and First Lady Obama, eight consecutive years at President and Dr. Biden’s residence, twice at the Kennedy Center Honors, and as part of the inaugural celebration for President Clinton. Since 2001, the Chorus has maintained a robust youth outreach program, GenOUT, and in 2015, launched the GenOUT Youth Chorus, the first LGBTQ+ and allied youth chorus in the DC metro area. Since its debut, more than 160 singers from 80 area schools have participated in GenOUT. GMCW is a member of Chorus America, the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses), and the Cultural Alliance of Washington.

As one of the premiere Grateful Dead tribute bands, BOD delivers a unique show equally enjoyable by veteran Deadheads, casual fans, and those who are just Dead-curious. Capable of playing just about every song from the vast Dead catalog, BOD has brought audiences together at Olney Outdoors for years – and we’re thrilled to welcome them back again.
