A National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere
This 2019 winner of the National Jewish Playwriting Contest takes place over the course of four Seders – the ritual meal for the holiday of Passover. Sisters Dev and Yael join their mother and her parents, Holocaust survivors Davide and Paola, to recite the traditional lines, “Now we are slaves, next year may we be free people.” But as the story moves back and forth in time – from Davide and Paola’s first Passover in America after the war, to a dystopian future that’s all too possible, the question of how to be free – from memories, oppression or the weight of obligation has no easy answers. Told with the wicked humor present only in the most loving of families, Ali Viterbi’s wildly imaginative play breaks new ground to grapple with the very meaning of freedom and history.
