Olney Theatre Institute Advanced Intern Training Program
The Olney Theatre Institute Advanced Intern Training program provides hands-on advanced training in theater production and administration. The program allows students, graduates, and other interested candidates the opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals in their field. This exposure to process and to our audience illustrates what theater means to the life of a community and how the community enriches its theater.

Olney internships are excellent springboards into a professional career in the arts. Olney Theatre Center interns have gone on to renowned graduate programs, major regional and Broadway stages, and freelance positions as directors, designers, stage managers, technical directors, technicians, theater administrators, and other industry leaders.

Casting Production Management Intern: Works directly with Producing/Casting Director in the development, scheduling, coordination, execution and hiring of creative artists and actors in Washington, D.C. area theatre. Interns manage all casting databases, are the frontline of contact with artists and play essential roles in the day-to-day operations of a dynamic 8+ play season plus affiliate events. Associated responsibilities in theatre operations include supervising rentals, working in the box office, arranging visiting artist travel, company management coverage, and working as run crew. Operational Production Management: Intern works directly with the Company Manager in the planning and management of an Equity theatre in Washington, D.C. area theatre. Interns manage calendars, databases, contracts, and human resource files; review policies and procedures; coordinate hiring of interns and full-time staff; work to facilitate communication and provide support throughout Production. Interns play essential roles in the day-to-day operations of a dynamic 8+ play season plus affiliate events. Associated responsibilities in theatre operations include supervising rentals, working in the box office, arranging visiting artist travel, company management coverage, and working as run crew. Fiscal Production Management Intern: Works directly with the Company Manager to record, reconcile and report on production budgeting and expenses. Responsibilities include contracting, financial paperwork, database management, production work, and general operations support. Costume Shop Interns: Work directly with Costume Shop Manager and Designers in construction and fabrication of costumes, plus running crew, maintenance and repair of costumes and wigs, in Washington, D.C. area theatre. The Education Intern: Works with the Education Manager in the planning and management of the Olney Theatre Institute, the education and outreach department at Olney Theatre, including the National Players (America’s longest running touring company). Manage auditions, budgets, contracts, and professional contacts. Prepare materials and teach workshops to students of all ages. Interns play essential roles in the day-to-day operations of a growing Education department, plus onsite events. Associated responsibilities in theatre operations include supervising rentals, working in the box office, arranging visiting artist travel, company management coverage, and working as run crew. Stage Management Interns: Work alongside AEA Stage Managers and Actors as Assistant Stage Managers for mainstage productions and work with a variety of directors and designers in rehearsals, tech and performances. Earn points towards union membership through the Equity Membership Candidacy Program. Responsibilities include managing crew, backstage and green room areas. Interns play essential roles in the day-to-day operations of a dynamic 8+ play season plus affiliate events. Associated responsibilities in theatre operations include supervising rentals, working in the box office, arranging visiting artist travel, and company management coverage as needed. The Technical Interns: Work directly with the Technical Director in the construction, fabrication and installation of sets, props, lights and sound for all productions and alternatively serve as running crew for professional productions in Washington, D.C. area theatre. Interns play essential roles in the day-to-day operations of a dynamic 8-play season plus affiliate events. Summer Interns: The Summer Interns work directly with the Olney Theatre Center Production Staff and Stage Management Staff during the run of a production. The interns will work as stage crew in one or more of the production areas including stage management, lighting, sound, wardrobe and/or backstage. Internship and apprenticeship applications are accepted year round but must be received 45 days before the starting date for consideration in current hiring cycles. Positions will be filled as soon as an appropriate candidate is identified. Receipt of application will be acknowledged.
